Protective Eyewear

Protective eyewear is mandatory for most occupations where the eye is at risk of injury from various hazzards e.g flying particles, chemical splashes, radiation etc.
The protective eyewear may take the form of spectacles, goggles, visors or face shields.
Such protective eyewear must comply with standards listed under the EN166 schedule. The standard has different sub-classes associated with the hazard involved, so the description may be complex. The apparatus must be marked to indicate that it conforms to the required standards for which it will be used.
Always choose eye protection appropriate to the hazard and ensure that it fits properly and is comfortable. If lenses are scratched they should be replaced immediately.
Employer Responsibilities:
Where a risk of ocular injury exists, the employer has specific responsibilities as regards provision of protective eyewear including the following:
- Identification of the risks involved
- Provision of appropriate eye protection on an individual basis
- Ensuring eyewear is maintained.
Other relevant standards are listed below for protective eyewear are listed below
If you are exposed to any risks of ocular damage at work then ask your optometrist for advice on suitable eye protection
